Eco-Chic products from Sony

odo-sony.jpg

There are a lot of conceptual solar powered cell phone prototypes and hand cranked chargers popping up in response to the strong consumer interest in more environmentally responsible products but in general consumer electronics usually lag behind in the development of green alternatives. In todays world where large OEM’s usually handle most of the manufacturing even for competing corporations, it’s very difficult for a company to deviate from the standard commodity electronic parts such as LCD screens and rechargeable batteries and still stay price competitive in this market.

Sony, traditionally has been a leader in paradigm shifting technology with their large research and innovation design budgets all though they have lost a lot of ground in the last 5-7 years to companies like Apple and Phillips. Today Sony looks to regain some of that innovation leadership through the development of their fresh out of the oven “odo” concept line of environmentally friendly products. The “odo” line of products do not require any AC adapters or chargers because they are mechanically powered. There is the Spin N’ Snap camera “no display”, the Push Power Play viewer, the Crank N’ Capture video camps, the Pull N’ Play headphones, and the solar array Juice Boxes for powering other devices.

My favorite hand cranked consumer electronic product concept continues to be the first version of the OLPC but with Sony coming into the picture, it probably wont be long before we can actually buy a well designed human powered consumer electronic product

You’re last comment really makes me think of the Moto bike charger for the India market (http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2007/01/09/motorola-to-roll-out-cellphone-charging-bicycle-in-emerging-mar/)... we need more of this!

I like the idea “odo”, too. (And I like the blog name “Sustainable” because I believe it is one of the important key words in 21st century.) I think this “odo” concept well shows that we started making an orbital adjustment of our way of thinking, or our value. I think launching successful business is getting more and more difficult today because people start getting tired the mediocre surprise with new products and seeking the products touching our hearts. The key to successful business is whether we can seize the consumers’ real needs. Although this has been the case since ancient time, it is getting more important these days. Sony is not going to launch business of products with this concept soon, and I think it will take long time to infiltrate as a profitable business. But this concept shows how Sony is good at grabbing the consumers’ eyes because consumers, including me, begin to look for something natural and comfortable. I believe this “odo” concept will touch our hearts in someday and hope this kind of business model will be sustainable one to breakthrough the way of today’s business.

    Thanks for the coment Kenta,

You are right, companies need to find new ways to connect emotionally with their customers in order to gain their loyalty. The best way to do this is through great design and great design is inherently sustainable.

Even today, many Indian cities have public transport in the form of pedal-powered tricycles or rickshas. We are about to phase them out because of their inhuman operational conditions and rustic aesthetics that do not fit into the new sleek global city image we want to create. Ironically, cities in the west are adopting this as a stylish and eco-friendly form of local transport. Like all good ideas, we in India will have to wait until it is celebrated by the west before we adopt it, even if it is sitting right under our noses!

    Great points Arvind,
In the west, we are being forced to come full circle and reconsider simpler solutions that have been around for ever and yet we think of them as innovation. Unfortunately many developing countries are phasing this same type of solutions away in efforts to be perceived as more industrialized. This dilemma is also very common in Latin America where instead of embracing great sustainable practices, most countries agenda is to try and be more like the US. Cuba is one of the few exceptions. http://www.sustainableday.com/?p=25

Great example of how CE manufacturers, when challenged, can deliver the goods. This community may be interested in http://www.greenelectronics.com which identifies the greenest consumer electronics and computer hardware products along with price comparison shopping.

I’m very encouraged by Sony. The R&D they have invested into sustainability will raise the bar for other consumer product manufacturers seeking to take a share out of the green market.
